St. Raymond High School for Boys Senior Announced as a Semifinalist in New York Times College Scholarship Program

Congratulations to St. Raymond senior Carmelo Urena who has been named a semifinalist in the New York Times College Scholarship Program. The Thursday, January 19 edition of the New York Times featured a list of students who are semifinalists for this prestigious award. Urena is a participant in the Student Sponsorship Partners (SSP) program and his sponsor Jared Halpern is very proud of what he has accomplished. “He’s a great kid with incredible potential. And good-natured too!” said Halpern upon hearing the news.

The New York Times College Scholarship Program was established in 1999 and has assisted 218 students attend schools nationwide. These scholars study in a variety of fields including medicine, law, engineering, science, teaching, finance, social services and many more areas. The Scholarship Program is open to high school seniors in public, private or parochial schools in the five boroughs who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and excelled in the face of adversity or significant financial need. Each student who wins will receive a four-year college scholarship, mentoring and summer employment. New York Times writers and editors serve as the judges when determining the annual winners.

Mr. Jimmie Sturgis, senior guidance counselor, recommended this scholarship opportunity to Urena and encouraged him to apply. “If I were to win, it would make my family proud and I would be proud of such an accomplishment,” Urena said. “It would be great to achieve this. The pressure is on, but I feel confident.”

For the past four years, Urena has been a consistent contributor to the St. Raymond school newspaper, The Raven Record. As a member of National Honor Society, International Club, a math tutor and a frequent visitor to the school weight room, Urena has demonstrated what it means to be a committed student.

Urena has two older sisters and lives in the Bronx with his mother. He hopes to attend Cornell University or NYU and study Biology in the fall.

Congratulations and Good luck, Carmelo!
