Attendance
The only valid reasons for an absence are sickness or a serious emergency. A parent has the legal responsibility to call the school before 9:00 a.m. (extension 13 or 14) on each day that a student is absent or tardy. When the student returns to school, he must submit a note signed by his parent explaining the reason for the absence and/or the nature of the illness. This note should be brought to the Business Office prior to the beginning of the student's first period on the day of his return. As the school is required to keep each note on file, a student who returns without such a note will be assigned to disciplinary detention. Students are responsible for making up all work missed during the absence and are encouraged to get their assignment from another student. In planning family trips, the dates for Christmas and Easter vacation must be observed. In cases where a student's absence is deemed by the Administration to be unreasonable, a physician's note may be required to allow the student to make up missed work. In addition, in order to receive credit, the Principal may require a student in excess of ten absences to make up all lost instruction time. A student must be present for the entire school day in order to participate in any school-sponsored activity that day or evening. Students may be dismissed early from school due to teacher absence (sixth and seventh period).
Early Dismissal
In the event that is absolutely necessary for a student to leave school prior to dismissal, a note from a parent or guardian must be brought to the Principal's Office by 7:45 a.m. The note must include the date of request, the dismissal time, and the reason for leaving early. If approved by the Principal, the student then brings the approved letter to the Business Office for an early dismissal form. The student will leave class at the designated time and must "sign out" in the Business Office and then "sign in" if his return will be before the end of the school day. Non-emergency medical and dental appointments must be scheduled for after school hours. If an unexpected or unplanned need for a student to leave school early should arise, a parent or guardian must initiate the request. No student will be dismissed without such a request.
When a student's seventh period teacher is absent, class is usually cancelled and the students are allowed to leave for the day. Additionally, on the rare occasions, a sixth period teacher is absent as well the students are allowed to leave for the day after the fifth period.
