English Department
Goals
- Develop proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
- Cultivate an appreciation and understanding of literature.
- Encourage an interest in learning.
- Teach strategies which will promote lifelong learners.
- Develop meta-cognitive and critical thinking skills.
- Develop research skills appropriate to grade and ability levels.
- Prepare students for the SAT exam through the development of vocabulary, grammar and critical reading skills.
- Prepare students for the English Comprehensive Regents Exam through the development of listening, writing and reading for information, understanding, literary response and critical analysis.
- Work with other departments in establishing an integrated curriculum, identifying common skills and setting standards for writing.
- Keep abreast of current trends and methodologies.
Curriculum
- Freshman: English 9
- Sophomore: English 10
- Junior: English 11
- Senior: World Literature, Modern Literature, American Ethnic Literature
