
Spanish and Italian are the two foreign langauges offered to the students of St. Raymond High School for Boys.
Offers all students initial foreign language experience providing practice in four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The sequential use of text leads students to the basic proficiency required by communicative curriculum. The themes are sequenced in an expanding patttern that begins with the student himself, moves outward to the school, family, shopping, etc. Grammar and vocabulary are reintroduced whenever possible to enable them to use what they have learned . In addition, students explore various areas of Spanish culture and geography.
Designed for students familiar with Spanish (usually because Spanish is spoken at home) but in need of training in writing and speaking correct Spanish. Basic grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and short pragraphs are introduced.
Focuses on the four necessary skills for learning a foreign language. Spanish 2 will also provide enhanced proficiency in the basic topics covered in Spanish 1. Students are encouraged to use what they already know in new ways while at the same time enhancing their knowledge.
Students work with themes that are both educational and appealing to the students. Such themes are sports, adolescence, occupations, tourism, and short stories. Students are encouraged to talk to develop proficiency of the language. All basic grammar concepts are reviewed.
Students will prepare for the New York State Regents Exam. The students' basic skills are developed through reading, writing, listening and oral expression. Students work with themes both educational and appealing. They are encouraged to talk, share with classmates in order to develop oral proficiency. All basic grammar concepts are also reviewed.
Offered to students with Spanish speaking knowledge acquired outside the classroom. Intensive practice in reading, speaking and composition is required . Correct usage in oral and written expression is developed thoroughly.
AP Spanish - It is highly recommended that students take both years. This course follows the syllabus and outline of the Advanced Placement Spanish Language Examination. Included are in-depth study of all language skills, advanced reading, composition and oral expression. The AP exam, if passed, will provide college credit.
A course designed to encourage students who have little or no experience with the language to communicate in la bella lingua. The course aims to equip students with a functional vocabulary and skeleton of grammar needed to communicate in written and spoken Italian. Students will also explore various areas of Italian culture and history, including the Renaissance, Italy during the Second World War, and the lives of Italian teenagers today.
Builds on the foundation of the first year by broadening the vocabulary and tightening the grammar skills of students, enabling them to communicate effectively and efficiently in Italian. The second year will emphasize putting new grammar topics into practice through class discussions, the performance of student-composed dialogues and other written work. By following major news stories about Italy and by viewing at least one full length Italian film, students will expand their understanding of Italian culture.
Students will prepare for the New York State Regents Exam. The course is designed to encourage them to listen to and read more sophisticated Italian passges and dialogues for comprehension and to formulate appropiate reponses. The course aims to further expand students' Italian vocabulary and revisit all the basic grammar concepts. Italian culture will be an integral part of the class through the use of Italian films, short excerpts of Italian television and the reading of a short story by a renowed modern Italian writer.
