St. Raymond High School for Boys announces its newly formed Varsity Handball Team. The Handball team competes against familiar rivals, and will play its home matches at the Orchard Beach Courts. Coach Mario Astarita recently said, “We have some naturally talented players who bring good experience and leadership to the team.”
St. Raymond has enlisted the service of HighSchoolSports.net which provides accurate, complete, and up-to-date scheduling information for our athletic teams.
Participation in the athletic program at St. Raymond High School for Boys is a privilege that carries certain responsibilities. Each student-athlete must abide by the rules established by the coach as well as make a firm commitment to the school, the coach and teammates. As a representative of St. Raymond High School, the student-athlete's behavior is to reflect the high standards of the school. This commitment will be demonstrated by a dedication to the sport, self-discipline, a willingness to work hard to improve and by a good attitude both on and off the playing field. Whether he’s in the classroom or on the baseball diamond, Luis Castillo doesn’t let up. He finds his motivation in being a role model for his younger brother.
“Everything I do, he tries to do,” says Castillo, News 12 The Bronx’s Student of the Week.
The St. Raymond’s High School junior maintains a 95 average and is a finalist for a select FBI internship this summer. His principal, Brother Daniel Gardner, says Castillo is just a good guy.
“If someone needs something, he’s the one to help,” says Gardner. Castillo also excels at baseball and track and field.
“With his academics, he’ll get into a great school,” said assistant baseball coach Marc Deluca. “I’m expecting we’ll hear in five or six years [that] he’s doing well for himself.” Castillo says he’s starting to look at colleges close to home like Fordham University and John Jay College of Criminal Justice. He also likes Connecticut and is looking there as well.
